Farewell and Rest in Peace, John Barry

This blog is all about ComputeSpace and not about music, but I did very much want to mention the passing of film composer extraordinaire John Barry at age 77.  When I was in that business over 30 years ago, I was strongly advised by my teachers and my peers to listen to his work and to see the films he scored to watch what he brought out in them.

He had a very deep musical influence on me even though I never got to meet him.  More than anything else, I appreciated his ability to bring out the romance of life.  Not just between two characters, but the situation itself. I think he was very romantic in his viewpoint.  Still he could also right taut cues and also haunting songs you never forgot.

You may not have known his name but if you're over the age of 20, I would guess you been influenced by his scores.  Below, I've added a list of my favorites.  I bet some are yours, too.

  • From Russia with Love
  • Zulu
  • Goldfinger
  • The Ipcress File
  • King Rat
  • Thunderball
  • The Chase
  • Born Free
  • You Only Live Twice
  • The Lion in Winter
  • Midnight Cowboy
  • Diamonds are Forever
  • The Glass Menagerie
  • Robin and Marian
  • The Deep
  • The Black Hole
  • Raise the Titanic
  • Inside Moves
  • Body Heat
  • High Road to China
  • Octopussy
  • Cotton Club
  • A View to a Kill
  • The Jagged Edge
  • Out of Africa

So long, John Barry. And thanks for scoring our lives.

Thanks to everyone who participated in buying a ticket to tonight's Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser for Patti Bern.

Sadly, tonight's dinner became a tribute in honor of her memory as she passed away earlier this week.

I couldn't be at the dinner tonight but Angie is attending.
